I paid a lot of attention to the release of Cherry Chocolate Double Brown Stout this year because I really wanted to try it.  Translation – I stalked the Deep Ellum Brewing twitter account.

I would up snagging some at the closest Specs to my house on my second attempt.  I was a week early the first time unfortunately, but I left with Sin Mint Temptress and Deep Ellum Play Date which is a good consolation prize.  Shout out to Specs for having such a good selection of bombers.

The bottle of CCDBS came with a little To/From Valentine’s Day tag on it in case you wanted to give this to your valentine as a gift.  Deep Ellum Brewing Co. is committed to making your Valentine’s Day special.

Here is what Deep Ellum says about CCDBS:

“CHERRY CHOCOLATE DOUBLE BROWN STOUT

CHERRY CHOCOLATE BALTIC PORTER

8% ABV

27 IBU

FEBRUARY (2016)

Who says Brewers can’t pluck your heartstrings? We’ll play right to your heart (and palette and belly) by taking our already smooth and rich Double Brown Stout and taking out to a night on the town. By adding real Red Tart and Dark Sweet Cherries at the beginning of fermentation and **(Organic/Fair Trade) cocoa nibs at the end of conditioning, once a year we treat our Double Brown Stout lavishly. Don’t be a selfish lover, share with this someone special.”

This beer starts with Deep Ellum’s Double Brown Stout.  Follow the link for my taste test of that beer.

Now for the taste test:

CCDBS pours out really dark brown with a head of tan foam.

My first whiff of this beer smelled kind of like a cafe mocha.  I got lots of coffee and chocolate.

There was some sweetness on the nose, but I didn’t get a lot of cherry.

I got loads of dark cocoa flavor right away on my first sip with some cherry on the finish.  I think that Deep Ellum accomplished their goal of giving this beer a chocolate covered cherry type of feel.

I felt like more cherry flavor came out the more that I drank.  The beer definitely evolves, and it’s really good.

The malts on this beer are really dark and roasty and chocolaty, so adding the cocoa nibs gives the beer a ton of dark chocolate flavor.

Finally, there is a creamy sort of element to the finish that I thought was really good.

This is not a light beer in any way, so I would not plan on having a lot of it in one sitting unless you have somewhere comfortable nearby to lay down for a couple minutes.

This is some tasty beer.  I get why it’s put out around Valentine’s Day, but it would be nice to be able to get it a little more often.

If I see any more bombers of Cherry Chocolate Double Brown Stout around I’ll definitely grab it, and I would suggest that you do the same before it’s gone.
